In a significant crackdown on the illegal arms trade, Kolkata Police have arrested two individuals, Ayush Kr Jha and Piyush Gupta, from the Babughat Bus Stand. The arrests, made in the early hours of Tuesday, followed a tip-off that led to the seizure of a country-made firearm and two live cartridges from their possession. This bust not only foiled a potential arms deal but also led to a major breakthrough in a recent shooting incident in the Muchipara area.
The interception took place at approximately 12:40 AM on September 2. Acting on credible intelligence, a police team from Maidan Police Station moved swiftly to the BabuGhat Bus Stand, a major transit point in the city. The two suspects were cornered and a thorough search of their belongings led to the discovery of the concealed weapon and ammunition. The prompt action by the police prevented the illegal transaction and removed dangerous items from circulation.
During the initial interrogation, the arrested individuals confessed that their purpose for being at the bus stand was to sell the firearm and ammunition. This admission provided a crucial insight into the illegal arms network operating in the city. Their plan was to quickly complete the deal and leave the area, but the police's swift response thwarted their intentions.
Following the confession, the accused were formally arrested at 1:25 AM. A case was initiated against them under the Arms Act, specifically Maidan PS Case No. 57, dated 02.09.25, U/S 25(1)(a)/29. This legal action ensures that the full force of the law is brought to bear on those involved in such crimes, sending a strong message to other criminal elements.
In a later development, police investigation revealed a direct link between the arrested duo and a recent shooting incident in the Muchipara Police Station area. This connection has turned the arms bust into a major case, as it provides a new lead for solving a more serious crime. The police are now confident that the information gleaned from these two individuals will help them identify other perpetrators and unearth the larger criminal conspiracy.
